Alcohol Ink Artist

Artist Statement

​

In my artwork I use the vivid and highly saturated colors of a rarely used

medium, alcohol ink. I paint with the inks in a loose and free style on smooth

non-porous surfaces.

​

My background was in realism. But, creating detailed portraits in oil

of people and pets became mundane and methodical. In fact, it reflected

my experiences in office work - a little too predictable, conventional, and really

boring. I have always been willing to try new things and new lines of work,

experiencing over 36 various and even some unusual jobs. And so, I followed

suit with my artwork. In 2015, I enrolled in an open studio class at the

Des Moines Art Center. My hope was to study abstraction, to better understand

it and employ its freedoms in my work.

At this same time, I started exploring with alcohol inks. The inks allowed

me to experiment and be playful. Controlling the inks turns out to be

quite difficult. I was intrigued by how the inks reacted to each other in

stunning unpredictable ways. They allowed me to feel free. I have found

a renewed sense of my own creativity and joy, painting the quizzical and

colorful abstracts.

​

I continue to feel compelled to paint more vibrant animals, for they tend

to be symbolic of where we might keep our emotions. I try capturing

their inner whimsical nature by paying special attention to the eyes,

conveying their unconditional love, sincerity, and devotion. They reflect

back to us, adding joy, comfort, and color to our lives.   “Confetti Pets”
